The unit has mechanical systems for ballasting, operation of lifting frames, flushing valves and strand jacks. The MPU-HL is normally not self-propelled, however the unit is equipped with thrusters and a DP-system for positioning during lifting operations. Miscellaneous other systems, needed for performing a safe load transfer and transport to shore, are included. The MPU-HL can remove topsides of 15000 tonnes with a freeboard of 25 meters. The ultimate lifting capacity depends on the MPU-HL draught and the object to be lifted. The MPU-HL hull have buoyancy reserves to lift up to 40 000 tonnes.

MPU Heavy Lifter (MPU-HL) is a trademark for the floating U-shaped concrete unit developed by MPU Enterprise AS. MPU is short for Multi Purpose Unit and reflects that the unit is intended for multiple uses such as removal of abandoned offshore structures, installation of new or refurbished offshore structures, floating production, floating storage, oil spill recovery unit, support structure for offshore oil and gas exploration facilities and floating dock.

The MPU-HL is equipped with steel lifting frames and heavy-duty strand jacks for single lift of large topsides and jacket structures. A unique flushing system ensures a rapid de-ballasting and increase of freeboard. The geometry of the concrete hull is based on extensive tank testing which ensures excellent motion characteristics. The lifting area has a clear space of 45 x 63 meters allowing for removal of large structures. The lifting frames are hinged at the attachment points on top of longitudinal pontoons.
